Privacy Policy

The short version. The Underscore application collects no personal information whatsoever. It has no analytics, no accounts, no crash reporting of our own, and no network access – the macOS App Sandbox it ships under grants it none. Your samples, kits and projects stay on your own disk.
This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics or advertising scripts. The rest of this page explains the few places where information does exist: our web host's server logs, anything you choose to email us, and what Apple passes to us as the store that sells the app.
This policy explains how The Undernet LLC (“we”, “us”) handles personal information in connection with the Underscore application and the underscore.music website. The Undernet LLC is the data controller. We are based in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
The application
Underscore collects nothing. It does not gather usage data, does not identify you or your device, does not require or offer an account, and does not contain any advertising or analytics software.
It cannot reach the internet. Underscore is distributed through the Mac App Store and runs inside the macOS App Sandbox. The only capability it requests is read and write access to files you yourself choose in a system open or save dialog. It requests no network entitlement of any kind, and no networking code is compiled into it. Even if it tried to send something, macOS would refuse.
Your work stays local. Kits, samples, projects, exported WAV files and application settings are written to your own disk, in locations you choose or in the standard per-user application support directory. We never see any of it, and there is no cloud service to sync it to.
The one outbound action. Choosing a Help menu item opens a page on manual.underscore.music in your default web browser. That is a normal web request made by your browser, not by Underscore, and it is subject to the “This website” section below. Underscore itself sends nothing and receives nothing.
This website
Cookies. underscore.music sets no cookies. There are no advertising tags, no analytics scripts, no third-party embeds, and no consent banner, because there is nothing to consent to. The same is true of manual.underscore.music.
Server logs. The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare records standard request information – IP address, timestamp, requested URL, referring page, and browser user-agent – and uses it to serve the site, to protect it against attack and abuse, and to produce aggregate traffic counts. Cloudflare processes this on our behalf under its own data processing terms. We do not use it to build profiles of visitors, and we do not attempt to identify anyone from it.
Fonts and assets. Every font, image, stylesheet and script on this site is served from underscore.music itself. Nothing is loaded from a third-party CDN, so visiting this site does not disclose your visit to anyone else.
Buying the app
Underscore is sold by Apple through the Mac App Store. Apple, not us, handles the transaction: your Apple Account, payment details, billing address and purchase history are collected and held by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy. We never see your payment information and we do not receive your name, email address or Apple Account identifier from a purchase.
What Apple does pass to us is limited to:
- Aggregate sales and analytics reports – counts of units, refunds, territories, device types and app usage, presented as totals. These are anonymised and aggregated by Apple; they do not identify individual customers, and we cannot re-identify anyone from them.
- Crash reports – if, and only if, you have turned on “Share with App Developers” in your macOS Analytics & Improvements settings. These contain technical diagnostic information about the crash. We use them solely to fix bugs. You can turn this off at any time in System Settings.
- App Store ratings and reviews – which are public, and show whatever display name you chose to publish them under.
If you contact us
If you email info@theunder.net for support or any other reason, we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever is in your message. We keep that correspondence so that we can answer you and maintain a record of our dealings with you. We use it for that and nothing else. Support mail is retained for as long as it is useful for support and record-keeping, and is deleted when it is not.
What we never do
- We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information. We never have and we will not.
- We do not share your information with third parties for their own marketing.
- We do not build advertising profiles, and there is no advertising in the app or on this site.
- We do not track you across other websites or applications.
- We do not read, index, upload, or transmit your samples, projects, or anything else you make with Underscore.
Service providers
We use a small number of providers to operate. Each processes data only as needed to provide its service to us:
- Apple – distribution, payment and crash reporting for the app, as described above.
- Cloudflare – hosting and delivery of underscore.music and manual.underscore.music.
- Our email provider – delivery and storage of mail sent to info@theunder.net.
We do not use analytics, advertising, marketing automation, customer data platform, or session recording services of any kind.
Legal bases
Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, we rely on our legitimate interests in operating and securing a website and in answering correspondence addressed to us (Article 6(1)(f)), and on the necessity of processing to perform a contract where one exists (Article 6(1)(b)). We do not rely on consent, because we do not carry out any processing that requires it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to the personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict our processing of it, to receive a portable copy, and to withdraw consent where we relied on it. If you are in California, you additionally have the right not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights; note that we do not sell or share personal information as the CCPA defines those terms, so there is nothing to opt out of.
In practice the only personal information we are likely to hold about you is an email thread you started. To exercise any right, email info@theunder.net and we will respond within the time the applicable law allows. If you are in the EEA or UK and are unhappy with our response, you may complain to your national supervisory authority.
Children
Underscore is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since the app collects nothing from anyone, this is a statement about the website and our email rather than about the product.
International transfers
We are based in the United States, and our providers operate globally. If you contact us from outside the United States, your message will be stored in the United States. Where required, our providers rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses for such transfers.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of the page. If a change is significant – for example, if a future version of Underscore ever gained a feature that needed the network – we will say so plainly here and in the app's release notes before it takes effect.
